With a few deft strokes, the post-depression era Jewish Community of Montreal comes to life In The Gramophone when a young girl's sense of identity becomes linked to the fancy gramophone at her Zaideh's house. The Gramophone sets the tone for the rest of the stories in this collection-stories that tackle issues such as adoption, care for the elderly, the effects of the holocaust on victim and victimizer, the single woman in our society, and family relationships-stories that run the gamut from sharp cautionary tales to joyous vignettes about evenings with good friends.
