Over the years, the Internal Revenue Service upgraded its
processes and systems which paved the way for the growth of the tax
industry. It also led to the practice of tax preparation that started in the
1980s.
Complications in tax procedures urged individuals and businesses
to seek assistance from tax professionals. In 2019, 56% or 71,725,000
of e-Filed tax returns were done by tax professionals.
IRS allows professionals who are registered with them to file tax
returns for their clients. Tax professionals are Tax Preparers, Enrolled
Agents, Certified Public Accountants (CPAs), and Attorneys.
Since 2000, becoming a tax preparer has been a lucrative career.
The top five states with most tax preparers are from California, Texas,
Florida, New York, and Illinois.

(PTINs) and 360,000 offices registered with Electronic Filing
Identification Numbers (EFINs) for the year 2019.
