Follow Colin Barmby as he leaves Margaret Thatcher's Britain for a village in northern Nigeria, where his work as a volunteer English teacher brings him into contact with, for example, an exploding oil tanker, a baby owl that clicks like a geiger counter, and a teacher of religious studies incapable of walking in a straight line. From there it's onward to places such as Cold War Bulgaria, strait-laced Singapore, colourful Thailand and Fiji, and Moscow as Gorbachev gives way to Yeltsin.
