Charles Phillips was born in 1953 and has lived in the Essex village of Stock all of his life. He was educated in Chelmsford and was a civil servant from 1972 until 2005 when he took early retirement so that he was able to pursue his interest in writing history. He did not start travelling until he was 40, and has travelled all over the Continent and the British Isles. One of his favourite countries is France.
