Born into a noble family in the Duchy of Savoy, he initially trained in law before embracing the priesthood.

He is best known for his spiritual classics, including Introduction to the Devout Life and Treatise on the Love of God, which emphasize that holiness is attainable for all people, regardless of their state in life.
