The egrets know first.
They lift from the south pasture in one pale, unhurried wave ? not startled, just informed ? and Aura watches them go from her place on the porch steps, a ceramic mug warm between both hands.
She already knows who is coming.

They find her the way people find things they didn't know they were looking for ? down a gravel road that most GPS systems either get wrong or give up on entirely, seven miles outside of Baton Rouge, on forty-three acres that have been quietly tending her as long as she has been tending them.
