The crisis of meaning brought about by the modern world and the destabilized authority of traditional religions have directed individuals toward new spiritual quests in the 20th century. One of the most striking and controversial figures of this global phenomenon is undoubtedly Chandra Mohan Jain, known as Osho. This study examines, through the lens of the History of Religions, how an academic philosophy teacher transformed into a charismatic cult leader. The book provides an in-depth analysis of the postmodern Zorba the Buddha ideala synthesis of Eastern mysticism and Western psychology created by Oshoas well as his radical critiques of traditional religion, morality, and sexuality, and his active meditation techniques aimed at dissolving the psychological blockages of modern man. Beyond a mere philosophical analysis, this work scrutinizes the dynamic institutionalization process, stretching from the Pune Ashram in India to the massive Rajneeshpuram commune in the United States. It explores the evolution of charismatic leadership into a micro-state model, analyzing through a sociological perspective its conflicts with legal boundaries, the state, and local populations, alongside allegations of bioterrorism and the eventual collapse. For readers seeking to understand the inner workings of New Religious Movements and the spiritual aspirations of the modern individual, this study serves as a comprehensive reference guide.
