Zusammenfassung

The Attention Economy has turned human focus into the central resource of the digital age, and adolescents are its most vulnerable population. Because the adolescent brain, ages 10 to 24, is undergoing major remodeling, it is uniquely sensitive to the design of social media. The reward system is hyper-responsive to likes and novelty, the social brain craves peer validation, while the executive control system for impulse and long-term planning is not fully mature until around age 25. Algorithms exploit this asymmetry through infinite scroll, autoplay, push notifications, and personalized feeds that deliver increasingly intense, emotional, and short-form content to maximize time-on-app. The result is measurable: attention fragmentation that weakens sustained focus and deep reading, reward dysregulation that makes real-world activities feel dull, heightened social comparison that fuels anxiety and identity confusion, and emotional contagion that amplifies anger and fear.

In Africa, where 60% of the population is under 25 and most access is mobile-first, the impact is accelerated. Platforms optimized for low data and short videos dominate education, culture, and public discourse, often crowding out local languages and exposing youth to viral risks while also offering new spaces for expression. This is not just a technology problem, it is a developmental and ethical one. If 20th century capitalism extracted minerals, the Attention Economy extracts developing minds. The response must be an "Empowerment Attention Economy" grounded in human dignity: protect neurodevelopment through age-appropriate design and "child attention laws," promote attention literacy in schools and families, uphold cultural identity by investing in local content and values like _Ubuntu_, and share responsibility among platforms, governments, and communities. The goal is not to ban social media but to ensure it serves flourishing. Adolescence should be a time for wonder, purpose, and connection. Technology must be ordered toward that end, so that from passive scrolling we move to active creation, and from extraction we move to empowerment.
