Kenneth Arnold's June 1947 sighting helped create the modern flying-disc era. The disputed Maury Island story introduced alleged debris, government investigators, threats, contradictions, and a fatal military flight. Hanford, one of America's most closely guarded atomic installations, began appearing inside military and intelligence discussions of unidentified objects.

Two Army intelligence officers died after investigating the Maury Island claims. The evidence supports a mechanical cause for their B-25 crash, but the timing, mission, and secrecy surrounding the investigation became inseparable from the legend that followed.
