J. Storer Clouston's sleuth, called in when the slow-witted rural detective fails to make progress, is the monocled and gentlemanly F. T. Carrington, anticipating by some years the first appearance of that more famous and aristocratic monocle-wearer, Lord Peter Wimsey.
