I am the boundary, and existence ceases upon me. My name is heard but not seen, and speaking of me is not a fabrication. I am the strange phoenix, and my mother is the collared dove (i.e., the Universal Soul or the Preserved Tablet), and my father is the sovereign eagle (i.e., the First Intellect or the Supreme Pen), and my son is the dark raven (i.e., the Universal Body). I am the element of light and darkness, and the locus of trust and accusation. I do not accept absolute light, for it is against me, and I do not know knowledge, for I neither repeat nor reveal. Whoever praises me is far-sighted, subjugated under the dominion of illusion (i.e., because the dust of physical forms has no objective existence, but is merely a conceptual, estimated, and intelligible creation). I have no power to protect myself, and the structures of the upper and lower universes belong to me. I am the truth that yields to the vastness of my being; I clothe myself in the garment of every state: either its bliss or its misery. I am not incapable of bearing the image, and I have no rank in the known image (i.e., I have no rank in objective existential images, but my rank is conceptual and intelligible). But I have been granted the ability to bestow knowledge, though I am not a scholar, and to grant judgments, though I am not a judge. Nothing appears that I was not already in, nor can any discerning student attain or fully comprehend it. It is to this extent that I have become great in the eyes of the verifiers (that is, those who have attained true understanding know that the dust of corporeal forms, whose existential rank is between the Tablet and the Throne, or more precisely between nature and the whole body, is but one manifestation of the reality of the universal truths encompassing Truth and creation, and of eternal and temporal forms). I have a presence in the gatherings of the contemplative (that is, the contemplative is the one who looks downward; the contemplatives here are the wise men of intellectual contemplation, who spoke of dust and called it matter, meaning by it the dust of corporeal forms. They stopped at this point and were not successful in ascending to the 'Ama' mentioned in the Shari'a, nor to the universal truth mentioned by the verifiers). Thus, I have clarified my state and demonstrated my truthfulness through my actions. [End of quote.]
